Statement

I have always had a keen interest in Graphic Design. However, it seems a curious fact that the general public often seem unaware of both its importance and its applications. Graphic design is everywhere, from billboards and fliers to signs and everyday packaging; we are affected both consciously and subconsciously by advertisements and designs which flicker in front of our eyes almost every second of the day. Graphic design can be purely informational, it can inspire, create an emotional response or even controversy. It's this diversity that has influenced my desire to study graphic design.

I wish to study at Manchester School of art and design because, to fully exploit my design potential, I believe I must study at a university that situates itself in the heart of contemporary design. I think Manchester is a fantastic place to live because it's a vibrant, inspiring city with design agencies that have produced cutting edge work that has been influential internationally. The course at Manchester offers many opportunities including international travel, the possibility of extremely prestigious design awards, and good links with industry which provides important networking possibilities, as well as a visiting lecture programme from professional designers. I believe this course will give me the chance to be part of this exciting and developing multi cultural, global community.

Visual Communications- Typography

The series of letters I have produced here were created to reflect the word “flowing.”

Myth and Legend

This project focused on comic strip style heroes and villains. I took a well recognised character, Tufty the squirrel, and subverted the original message of the helpful cartoon in a comic book style.

Visual Communications Pathway Project

This is my latest completed body of work and is a project focusing on the idiom “a leopard cant change its spots.” Therefore I looked at DNA, the double helix and DNA sequencing patterns.

The final image is an advertisement aimed towards employers promoting employment for ex- convicts. I have combined the hand rendered DNA sequencing patterns with photographic work and Photoshop vector imagery. Because it is current work, the advertisement is not completely resolved.

Life Drawing

Ink and stick life drawing. Holding the stick at the furthest point from the ink produced lines that were less controlled and more visually interesting and dynamic.

Visual Communications- "Desperately Seeking"

Here I have produced an elaborate advertisement for the thing that I am "Desperately Seeking"- God. I have combined the detailed textured qualities of mono-printed drawings with marker pen drawing. Using Photoshop, I then created the vector block colours.

Fashion Illustration

These pieces explore fashion illustration. It depicts fashion clothing from found images in a variety of media including collage, inks, acrylics and marker pen.

Carbon Copies?

This piece has been created by transcribing a traditional image by Diego Velazquez and painting it in the style of a contemporary artist, Arturo Di Stefano.
